“Thank you for coming.” Amanda closed the door behind Bridget and Charlie. Syssi was already there, perched on a corner of Amanda’s desk, leaving the two guest chairs for the volunteers.

Bridget sat down and crossed her jeans-clad legs. “I needed a change of scenery. Not that it’s such a stretch from my clinic to your lab. But still.”

Charlie didn’t seem as happy. “It’s boring. And none of the test subjects were hot.”

“Anyone caught your attention?” Syssi asked.

He shrugged. “Hannah is pretty. But she works here.”

Syssi perked up. “Did you feel anything for her? Did you like her?”

“If you’re asking if I felt like shagging her, then yeah. Definitely.”

The boy wasn’t the sharpest tool in the shed. “What Syssi means is, did you feel an affinity for her. Was her vibe different than that of other humans?”

Charlie gave it about a minute of thought, which was better than Amanda had expected of him. “Can’t say that I felt anything different about her. She is smarter than most of the chicks I hook up with, and she seems nice, but that’s about it.”

Amanda turned to Bridget. “How about you, anything different?”

The doctor uncrossed her legs and planted her elbows on her knees. “I have to agree with Charlie. Hannah is intelligent and charming, but if you ask me whether I want to invite her to dinner or introduce her to my son, then the answer is no.”

That was disappointing. But at the same time, it was a relief. There was no need to tell William anything, and saying goodbye to Hannah would be heart-wrenching only because Amanda liked the girl but not because she was letting a Dormant slip through her fingers.

“What about your test subjects, Charlie, anything?”

He shook his head. “The first guy was a prick, the second one was okay but nothing special. Same for the two girls.”

“How about you, Bridget?”

“Again, I have to agree with Charlie. I filled out my report so you can read exactly what my impressions were.”

Syssi sighed, echoing Amanda’s sentiments.

Today wasn’t a good day.
